The Middle East has been witnessing rapid developments including the signing of the so-called Abraham Accords, the arrival of the Biden Administration, and the uncertainty around the future of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). A major dilemma for the different stakeholders is how to restore the JCPOA and re-engage in a constructive dialogue with Iran, while addressing the security concerns of Israel, on the one hand, and Arab/Gulf states on the other hand.
These developments bring into focus the need for parties to the JCPOA to find the right sequence of steps to have the U.S. re-join the JCPOA and Iran restoring full compliance to it, while also tackling the questions concerning the negotiation of the Middle East WMD-Free Zone.
The Middle East Treaty Organization (METO) and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) have brought together non-proliferation experts and representatives from the Iranian, Arab and Jewish constituencies of the United States in order to analyse the opportunities and challenges these recent developments present.
Speakers include:
- Jamal Abdi - Executive Director, National Iranian American Council (NIAC)
- Dr. James Zogby - President of the Arab American Institute (AAI)
- Dr. Ira Helfand - Co-president, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
- Kelsey Davenport - Director of Non-proliferation Policy, Arms Control Association
- Sharon Dolev - Executive Director, Middle East Treaty Organization and the Israeli Disarmament Movement
- TBC - Representative from JStreet
In January, METO launched a new series of podcasts called "In The Zone". Throughout the course of the series Paul Ingram and Anahita Parsa will interview experts across a variety of fields related to the WMD-Free Zone. So far, we have interviewed our very own Sharon Dolev and Emad Kiyaei, founding directors of METO, and followed it up with an interview with Dr Tarja Cronberg of SIPRI. We have also interviewed former Head of Verification and Security Policy at the IAEA, Tariq Rauf, Egyptian Ambassador, Karim Haggag, Renata Dwan, Senior Executive Officer of Chatham House and Wael Al Assad, former representative of the Secretary General for Disarmament and Regional Security at the League of Arab States.
New episodes are published once a week. Check out our podcast page for the latest episodes. Apart from on our website, our podcasts are also available on SoundCloud, Spotify and YouTube.
