NJ Peace Action

CALL TO ACTION!

Calling all people who want to build a fair, democratic, ecologically sustainable and peaceful future!

Join us from April 24 – 26, 2015, prior to the NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY (NPT) 5-YEAR REVIEW CONFERENCE!

Join us in the streets and meeting halls of N.Y.C. and your own capitals and cities worldwide!

Join with “Move the Money” and “Climate Change” forces to press the nuclear powers to negotiate toward the COMPLETE ELIMINATION OF THEIR NUCLEAR ARSENALS!

There’s a history to this NPT Conference:

It began in 1970 with the signing of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty and stands now as the arms treaty with the most number of participating countries of any arms treaty – 189. In 1995, it was agreed to extend the treaty indefinitely and continue the 5-year review conferences.

In 2010 the NPT signers unanimously agreed to hold a conference on a “Middle East Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction” to be held in 2012. That conference has yet to be convened.

In 2011 the International Red Cross called for negotiations to “COMPLETELY ELIMINATE NUCLEAR WEAPONS.”

In 2013 Norway hosted a conference on the “Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons,” which 127 governments attended and in 2014 Mexico hosted 146 governments. BOTH CONFERENCES WERE BOYCOTTED BY THE P-5 NUCLEAR WEAPONS-POSSESSING NATIONS (U.S., ENGLAND, FRANCE, CHINA AND RUSSIA)!

The P-5 also boycotted the Working Group established by the UN General Assembly in 2012 mandated to develop proposals to take forward nuclear disarmament negotiations to achieve a world without nuclear weapons!

In 2013 the General Assembly also initiated a High Level Meeting on Nuclear Disarmament, to which the P-5 sent only low-level representatives.

In 2014 the Republic of the Marshall Islands urged the International Court of Justice to find the nine nuclear-armed states (the P-5 plus Israel, India, Pakistan and N. Korea) in non-compliance with their obligations to disarm under international law.

THIS COURAGEOUS ACTION BY DIRECT VICTIMS OF NUCLEAR COLONIALISM REMINDS US THAT DISARMAMENT DEPENDS ON COLLECTIVE ACTION BY THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD, using all available peaceful means. We urge governments of non-nuclear-weapons States to intervene in the Marshall Island cases, or file their own parallel applications. For more information about the Marshall Islands, attend a screening of the film, “Nuclear Savage” about the impact of nuclear testing on the people and environment of the Marshall Islands. The film will be shown at the Puffin Foundation,  20 Puffin Way, Teaneck on Thursday, March 12th at 7:00pm.

2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It also marks 45 years since the first 5 nuclear powers agreed in Article VI of the NPT to UNDERTAKE GOOD –FAITH NEGOTIATIONS FOR THE ELIMINATION OF THEIR NUCLEAR ARSENALS.

IT IS LONG PAST TIME FOR THE WORLD’S PEOPLE TO CALL TO ACCOUNT ALL THOSE WHO EXERCISE POWER BY THREATENING NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION!

JOIN US IN NEW YORK CITY and around the world for international days of action, including:

AND

CALL UPON THE PARTIES TO THE NPT TO USE THE 2015 REVIEW CONFERENCE TO IMMEDIATELY DEVELOP A TIME-BOUND FRAMEWORK FOR NEGOTIATING THE TOTAL BAN AND ELIMINATION OF ALL NUCLEAR ARSENALS.

CALL ON THE FOUR STATES OUTSIDE THE TREAT THAT HAVE NUCLEAR ARMS (India, Israel, N. Korea and Pakistan) TO JOIN IN ANY SUCH NEGOTIATIONS IMMEDIATELY, WITHOUT DELAY!

JOIN US FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR PLANET AND OUR CIVILIZATION!
